Uncertainty.
This section lists problem-factors and thinking-traps that this process can address. In general, addressing the issue requires the issue to be filtered through the processes of self-awareness qv and open-mindedness qv.

Generalise title to 'awareness' (or input/self-evaluation)?? Input data may be wrong.
Avoiding ALL problem-factors qv and thinking-traps qv starts with self-awareness. Appreciating the issue (problem-factor or thinking-trap) isn't natural; need to realise (probably with reasoning mode qv). Possible realisations: I don't know; I may be avoiding the issue; I may be wrong; I may be making an invalid assumption without realising it.
Be aware of System 1's simplistic and optimistic answers. Try to become consciously aware of when using a non-reasoning mode when reasoning would be more appropriate.
May need others to point out when they’re using System 1 when it’s inappropriate (see option-generation qv).
Uncertainty provides a vacuum of info which may be inadvertently filled with personal biases, mental models, assumptions about risk factors, etc.
Self-awareness should influence most/all engine processes (via open-mindedness qv). Self-awareness and open-mindedness therefore act like general-purpose filters for the other processes. Rather than describing the effect of self-awareness on every other process on this page, every other process page will describe the effect that self-awareness has on that particular process.
Why do some people use alcohol, drugs, binge eating, distraction, etc, to mask negative emotions caused by dissatisfaction?[BW] It indicates a decision to make the emotion go away by chemical means rather than by solving the problem to the extent possible, which shows the influence of emotion on priorities. Maybe the priority, or objective function, is to make the unpleasant emotion go away rather than to solve the problem that causes the emotion. It may also relate to a ring-of-responsibility (problem-assessment qv) issue: feeling bad about something that the individual can't change to the extent desired. Looking at the issue backwards: if the decision is alcohol, then the problem being tackled is that of feeling bad (ie, emotion).
